My Country, 'tis of thee

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;

Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountainside,
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;

I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees,
Sweet freedom’s song;

Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing;

Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King
.

Cup 'o Tea

Around these parts we had a very wet cold June, I think it was the wettest and coldest on record. (Global Warming?) Because it was so cold and wet there were many cool weather crops that got an extended growing season and some of our warmer weather plants had a chance to grow big and tall before they began to produce. Things like Melons and winter squash will be in short supply this year, they really can't take a season shortened by four weeks, I am hoping the fall will be warmer than normal.

Because of this it looks like we are going to have a bumper crop of Chamomile this year, and not wanting to lose any or buy any this winter I set the children to work picking the flowers.

Since picking flowers is generally frowned upon at my house, they think it is fun to pop the blossoms off the plants.

I am going to dry these little babies and save them for cold winter afternoons. I seep a weak Chamomile tea, add warm milk, honey and the kids love it! It is a great way to warm the belly after an afternoon in the snow.

Sweet Peas

I have a lot of flowers in my yard

There is a general rule that the flowers in the yard DO NOT get picked.

I like them outside to brighten the yard, they last longer and are prettier outside, nothing is sadder to me than a daisy that looks thin because it has been picked over.

anyway...

There is one exception,
and that is my
Sweet Peas!

I have grown them now for four years and have fallen in love with these flowers,
they are so pretty and different and the
fragrance

HEAVENLY!

I plant these special little beauties in the spring and about June they start to bloom, I cut every single bloom until they stop flowering in August. (By doing that I keep them from going to seed and they bloom longer.) I have small vases in the kitchen and the living room and the smell fills the house.

The best part is filling small jars and sending them to the neighbors, there is nothing like fresh flowers to brighten someones day.

That kind of Mom

I have become "that" kind of Mom

sigh....

I swore I never would,

but I did it.

You know the kind of mom I am talking about. The type that has to pack separate snacks for their kid when they go to a party because there might be corn syrup in the food, or food dyes, or milk or.....etc.....

Yes, yes

that is ME!

My oldest daughter has ADHD and we have been treating it for several years with medication that seem to help. In the last year we have added a couple more medications because her symptoms have become increasingly hard to manage. I have wavered a lot on my level of comfort with her medications. On one hand they do help, a lot, they make her behavior manageable and her social skills better, on the other hand she is taking some powerful psychotropic medications and I wondered if we were just covering up the problems instead of teaching her to cope.

At the first of the year I visited a "witch doctor" (really she is a Nurse Practitioner who does Biofeedback) and she healed my chronic fatigue (thyroid). I decided to take my oldest daughter and see what she had to say. We found out that she is very sensitive to cow milk, corn syrup (and any other highly processed sweetener, like cane sugar and fructose) , peanuts and artificial sweeteners.

Pretty much anything that is found in a package.

Which isn't much of a problem, I am a "from scratch" kind of gal...but...I do use a lot of milk and sugar in my cooking.

It has been a bit of an adjustment, but not too painful. She uses Goat milk or almond milk and honey for sweetener (going to get some agave nectar soon). In my cooking I too have switched to honey and Goat milk (I need to find someone who has a goat...). We also have started to wean her off the medication, and have added some supplements. There has also been a lot of prayer.

So what have we found a week later? I am cautiously optimistic. We won't see the full effect yet, she is still on her medications, but some very promising things have happened. On Friday evening we went to an event, an open house for the newest LDS Temple, she was great (her medication had worn off by this point, usually I would have given her a booster pill, but I didn't) until I let her have a cookie at the end, about 15 minuets later she was bouncing off the walls! I thought it was an interesting occurrence and took note of it. On Sunday we were at my parents house and she sat quietly and visited, a little angel, typically she would have been causing all sorts of trouble with her cousins and would have been banned to the corner. Our evenings have been calmer and she is more obedient.

I am excited that this just might work.

So, I guess I am "that" kind of mom!

Sewing Skirts

Last week was crazy busy, there was something major scheduled for everyday and I am burned out! Luckily this week is blissfully empty (except for an appointment to get family pictures on Thursday) and I am going to work really hard to keep it that way!

I also took on a fun little project amid the craziness and make super cute skirts for my girls, they looked so cute all dressed up I had to take pictures of my brood.

Onions out my ears!

Today was a working in the yard kind of day.
It had rained all night,
then the sun dawned fresh and crisp
and cool.

I harvest the garlic that I had planted in November, they are a little small, next time I will put them in a place where they can stay longer. I need their planter box for other things.

I thinned the carrots that needed thinning.
They are little bitty things, but the kids will have fun eating them.

Then turnips of coarse, I planted a lot of those this season.
I am going to give turnip greens another try tomorrow.
Wish me luck.

Then I thinned out my onion bed and I got 1.5 pounds of green onions!
I don't cook much with green onions,
however next week, we are going to be eating a lot of these little babies.

I planted some cabbages and broccoli
trying to stagger the harvest
and got inside just before this happened

I love early summer rain!
